JOANIE LOVES CHACHI : One Season Wonders

“Thanks for remembering JOANIE LOVES CHACHI.

Usually, I consider this brief spin-off as a mere supplemental addendum to the popular classic sitcom HAPPY DAYS.

Nevertheless, JOANIE LOVES CHACHI does appear to have become one of the few short-lived television series ( lasting just about a single season or perhaps a little more than a full year but definitely not reaching a second year or season ) that uniquely remains entrenched within the collective pop culture lexicon and surprisingly gains a cult following afterwards.

Think of such examples as The Prisoner, Honey West, Kolchack: The Night Stalker, Police Squad, Profit, Pasadena, Firefly, Freaks And Geeks, My So-Called Life, Square Pegs, James At 15 and The Famous Teddy Z. All of them single season or less TV programs which ought to have quickly and permanently vanished into the historical dustbin of pop culture memory but instead enigmatically still refuse to be forgotten many years after their premature cancellations.

And when it ultimately comes to other brief spin-offs, does anyone out there equally remember Fish ( from Barney Miller ), The Ropers ( from Three’s Company ), The Tortellis ( from Cheers ), AfterM.A.S.H. ( from M.A.S.H. ), Flo ( from Alice ),Gloria ( from All In The Family ), Tabitha ( from Bewitched ), Living Dolls ( from Who’s The Boss ? ), The Golden Palace ( from The Golden Girls ), Enos ( from The Dukes Of Hazzard ), Booker ( from 21 Jump Street ), Richie Brockelman : Private Eye ( from The Rockford Files ), Models Inc. ( from Melrose Place ), Young Americans ( from Dawson’s Creek ), Time Of Your Life ( from Party Of Five ) and The Lone Gunmen ( from The X-Files ) ?

Not likely for the great majority of them.

Yet numerous TV fans still fondly remember and know JOANIE LOVES CHACHI.

Go figure.”
